Living With Depression and Anxiety - Free Essay Example

As many years go by, depression and anxiety have truly reached the surface than it did back in the 1950s. We are all so exposed to a whole lot more in this generation and traumatized by events, or sadly, are simply born with either one or both of these mental health disorders. While there can be many causes of both depression and anxiety, lets dive into the most common causes of these two mental illnesses. Beginning with depression, although there are various reasons, the most common causes are traumas, chemical imbalances or drugs. People who have witnessed or was a victim of a traumatizing event, could affect their whole life causing many flashbacks and sadness. A chemical imbalance is when there are not enough or more than enough of a chemical in your brain titled neurotransmitters. This can be treated with the right medications which takes about four to six weeks to get going and begin doing some justice to your mentality. Lastly, drugs can play a big role causing this feeling, but there is no certain drug exactly that causes depression because it is almost impossible to list the amount of drugs that is capable of doing so. The continuance and discontinuance of drugs may cause various symptoms of depression. Anxiety has many different common causes like the environmental aspects of someones life, genetics or withdrawal. Living in an environment that is toxic, unsafe or unorganized, can cause many people anxiety. This disorder may be simply passed down from generation to generation but some are most likely to be exposed to it with the right trigger. Due to medications being given by doctors to help yourself and the problems you may have, the misuse of medication, side effects or taking them only when necessary could have a huge toll on your body and very rarely, depending on the medication, cause anxiety. As stated before in the last paragraph, a chemical imbalance and the withdrawal of drugs or alcohol can cause anxiety as well. Moving onto the different types of depression, there are various amounts of names diagnosed to different people, but only some will be addressed. Major depressive disorder, well known as clinical depression, is often diagnosed when people are feeling depressed most of the time, have lack of concentration, thinking about death or possibly even suicide, lack of appetite or too much appetite, no energy, or when your routine in sleeping has changed drastically. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that affects either your emotions or body, physically. Some symptoms may include insomnia, body aches or pain, anxiety, unable to keep organized or make decisions, and even feeling incompetent. This disorder has a higher risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide. Seasonal affective disorder usually only occurs when the weather changes in a certain season. While the weather makes its changes, people experience changes too, in weight, sleep and emotion. This is caused because there is a disruption in the normal circadian rhythm that occurs in your body. Depending on the amount of light that is able to enter the eye, this is known to impact the pattern in the body. There are several more undiscussed types of depression, these are the most common. Anxiety also has various names and different types of ways on how it appears. Generalized anxiety disorder is diagnosed when a person is feeling anxious over many things or for no reason, more than five to six days of the week, for over six months. People are usually worried about school, work, family or friends but GAD disturbs how people act and think about everything. A lot of people who are affected by this, worry more about things than necessary. For example, some may see washing the dishes as an easy task, but it is much more stressful and harder to perform when you have generalized anxiety disorder because it begins to consume your brain and body with anxiousness and an uneasy feeling. Although there are many reasons that these two things occur, there are several ways to help treat it.

The Generation Of The Aging Process - 1184 Words

As the clock ticks the years roll by, seconds turn to minutes, minutes to hours and before you know it days turn to years. Everyday lived is a new experience, perhaps the older you are the more you have experienced. Life is an ever changing aspect each individual encounters. As individuals grow older things start to diminish or things they once were able to do turn into things they are no longer able to do. In order to become a successful therapist it is important to understand all aspects of the aging process and how each stage effects each individual differently. To further my knowledge of the aging process, I decided to focus on the elder cohort. I interviewed a unique individual with a very inspiring story of how the ever-changing lifecycle has affected her and her everyday life now. Doris was born in July of 1938, she had four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. The family of seven lived on a farm and grew up in a very poor environment. Doris’s father died wh en she was only eight years old, consequently, she was forced to play an adult role. Although very hurt, Doris became a mentor to her younger siblings. Doris’s youngest brother whom she favored and confided in was killed in a car accident at the young age of twenty-three. Losing her brother took a major toll in her teenage life but also helped make her who she is today. The pain of losing her brother turned her world upside down but also helped make her a mentally stronger person. It is divided into four parts. Part I represents diversity in the workforce, which reflects the rational of organizations and how they handle diversity in the occupations of their workers. Part III denotes religion, where as more employers are beginning to recognize the need to allow employees to take time to pray. Part IV symbolizes the personality traits in diversity and how different is not always viewed as wrong but can be an incentive to other employees. Introduction Diversity relates to gender, age, language, ethnicity, cultural background, disability, sexual orientation or religious beliefs. Diversity also refers to the countless ways we are different in other respects such as educational level, job function, socio-economic background, personality profile, geographic location, marital status and whether or not one has family or other career responsibilities. Diversity in the Workplace Managing workplace diversity well requires the creation of an wide-ranging environment that values and utilizes the contribution of people of different backgrounds, experiences and perspective. All organizations policies, practices and processes that impact on the lives of employees need to recognize the potential benefits that can be derived from having access to range of perspectives and to take account of these differences in managing the workplace. Work systems, organizational structures, performance appraisal measurements, recruitment and selection practices and career development opportunities all have impact on the organizational behavior upon the management of diversity. Managing diversity builds on the EEO foundation but puts a new emphasis on the importance of valuing workplace difference as good management practice. This approach means that organizations must develop people management strategies to value and accommodate differences in the background perspective and family responsibilities of their employees. It requires them to acknowledge the positive contribution that diversity can make to improving productivity and generating new ideas and ways of doing things. Merit is also a keep principle in the succession of an equitable and diverse workforce. The merit principle means that appointment and promotion decisions must be made without patronage, favoritism or unjustified discrimination. There is a statutory vacancy advertising arrangements which ensure that all eligible candidates have a reasonable opportunity to apply. Also selection decisions must be made on the basis of a comparative assessment of relative suitability or efficiency. Diversity and Age In order to maintain a competitive edge the legal profession and the clients for whom they represent, need to employ an age diverse workforce that reflects the demands of our changing community and its potential markets. They are considerable bottom-line benefits in utilizing qualified older workers and according to the United States study conducted for the National Council on the aging, most reported that they believed older workers were reliable, thorough, conscientious and dependable. Myths and stereotypes must be directly countered through education. By making a healthy business case for age diversity, many employers have driven significant change within their organization. The business case is based on a simple premise; people are living longer than ever before and are having fewer children. As a result the population is aging. From an employment perspective, the dramatic drop in numbers of young people coming into the labor markets is beginning to have a huge impact on the pool from which employers are able to recruit new employees. The business case for age diversity is common sense, the United States workforce is growing steadily older, which is causing the labor pool to contract. Employers seeking skilled staff are experiencing chronic recruitment difficulties. As the workforce, ages and contracts, skilled workers will increasingly come at a premium.
